AWA! [Sep. 22nd, 2009|01:47 am]
So I survived yet another lovely AWA. I had a fabulous time hanging about with animiko, amazonmandy, theindianocean, and ghinto for a vast majority of the weekend--they are such lovely people!--and getting to see lots of friends from all over.

The panels went really well, and the Ouran event was ridiculously well-attended. I think I went overboard hamming it up as Hunni to entertain my team...my voice is punishing me! (Or maybe it was just because I babbled a lot in general this weekend. I need to learn when to shut the *bleep* up!)

And the cosplay! My god, all the kids brought their A-game this year! I have rarely squealed so much over so many costumes at a single con! And the twins' Tutu and Krahe Russian ballet masterpieces, OMG! (Not enough exclamation points in the world to describe the AWESOME!!!!!!)

I'm so sad that it's over, but I guess it wouldn't be special if it happened more than once a year.

Update! [Aug. 20th, 2009|10:01 pm]
So, I just realized I haven't posted here in a while and you all probably think I'm dead. Some days it feels like I am dead, but I appear to still be breathing and capable of standing upright on occasion. Anyway, recent developments in the Life of Me:

* Our little Panda got "dangerously" married in a lavish event that quite seriously put some silver-screen wedding depictions to shame. Actually, the entire fun-filled week was filled with hilarious hijinks that kept Miko speculating as to whether or not we were secretly being filmed for a romantic comedy! It was awesome fun to see the whole gang for such a happy occasion.

* Accident Guy got a ridiculously generous settlement from the insurance company. This will not affect me, but I'm still pissed. That was insurance fraud, asshole.

* I'm still doomed to part-time pay for an indeterminate amount of time. However, my immediate boss retires at the end of September, which will leave ONLY part-timers running the place, so SOMETHING will have to happen in the next month.

* To supplement my income / get myself on the full-time, non-starving-artist career track, I've taken up freelance work, mostly from oDesk.com. I've snagged three projects thus far, and it's lots of fun! (Even if it does cut into my sleeping time...)

* Interest in the Mysterious Comic Project was high at SDCC. I'm working hard on taking the critiques to heart and bringing it up to par.

* The cosplay gods must have decided to bring me back to the flock, because my burnout has finally eased to the point that I am sewing again. It's something (relatively) simple and silly that I just wanted to make for the hell of wearing it to AWA; to prevent a burnout-relapse I'm saving my return to overly-complicated group ventures for next season.

* I'm still mildly miffed that I can't attend Dragon*Con this year, but at least Michael is coming to my cousin's wedding with me. It will be so much better to sit back and watch the show with him. I say "show" because this wedding promises to be a lavish affair--8 bridesmaids!--and because of...interesting...dynamics between extended family members who will be present. Popcorn might be required. Or Tasers. I love the bride and groom, so I sincerely hope nothing Springer-worthy happens.

* Michael and I are quite happy together. It's nice to have the right someone around. ^_^

"Today will be...our Independence Day!" [Jul. 4th, 2009|01:53 am]
Remember, while you are celebrating "Fuck You, King George!" Day, that in the past few weeks dozens of Iranians have died and thousands more have been arrested, beaten, and raped in their fight for the same freedoms we enjoy every day (even if we rarely exercise them).

And remember that after the Declaration was signed on July 4th, 1776 it took almost five years of war to truly win our independence. Here's hoping the people of Iran don't have to fight that long.

So wear some green with that red, white, and blue today, and remember that freedom isn't found in lofty declarations, but on everyday people standing up and saying "This is WRONG."

Ah, political cartoons. A picture is ALWAYS worth a 1000 words!

Hopefully the artist doesn't mind us passing his work around like mad. If I could read your name, I would credit you, you genius!

The New Iran [Jun. 20th, 2009|10:49 pm]
I was inspired by Mandy's recent post about Iran's stolen election to weigh in for myself on what's happening half a world away. These thoughts have been percolating for days, and I've had few people to share them with other than Michael and my dad.

EDIT: I'm appalled and inspired and generally angry as hell right now Watch this video (if you can, be warned it's damn bloody) of a young woman dying in the streets of Tehran. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjQxq5N--Kc

Dear People of Iran,

I am so very proud of you. You are reminding the world what it means to be a true democracy, reminding them that sometimes people must crawl out of their personal cocoons and join together to cry out with once voice that their leaders have chosen the dark path for their nation and that as a people they refuse to follow.

For all that our nation was founded on such a movement, in past decades America hasn't been much of a role model in that regard. We've been too caught up in trade, sports, and cable television. Last November was the first time in 30 or 40 years that we stood up for ourselves the way you are standing up for yourselves. (Let's keep the violence to a minimum, though, okay? It gets out of hand and becomes counteractive; just ask the French.)

But it's not quite the same, our protests. I think one of the reasons we forget how to protest is that as Americans we are guaranteed the right to do so. As long as we don't hurt anyone (and fill out the right paperwork *ahem*) we can say whatever we like. Sure, it takes guts to stand on the street corner and announce what you believe in. But it takes a lot more courage to do so when armed government troops might break down your door the following night and shuffle you off to jail, or murder you in your bed. Or, hey, maybe even just mow you down where you stand in the street.

We don't have to face that fear. You do. And that makes your courage and resolve a thousand times more beautiful and precious. You are announcing loudly to the world that you suspect you have been wronged by your own government, and even under threat of harm you will not be silent about it.

You are the true face of freedom. The point is not whether Ahmadinejad or Mousavi won; the point is that you are making damn sure the election is valid.

Keep up the good work. Prayers are being offered to all the deities and forces of the universe that you wrest control of your country back in the end, and that relatively few of you are harmed in the process. (And for those of you that are being harmed, rest assured that your brothers and sisters from nations all over the world are fuming, furious at your treatment and devising ways to hold accountable those who did the harming.) We can't win this for you (that would sully your victory) but we will do what we can to help you on your way, even if it's just turning our Twitter avatars green.

I'm sure "Neda" and the Nameless Protester from Tianamann Square and all the protesters from ages past are cheering you on from the Great Beyond.

May Allah bless you all (or any deity you claim!)
Allison

P.S. Send some of your organizers to Burma ("Myanmar" my ass). They could use the help.

Books! [Apr. 11th, 2009|12:46 am]
So, while I was in Pigeon Forge I found a place called Book Warehouse, a lovely store where scrumptious $30 hardbacks are available for $8. The selection is kind of odd, but that suits me just fine; personally I love randomly picking things up and seeing what I get. (That reminds me, I found my old library card. I should get a new one so I can stop spending money.)

From this Mecca I selected three volumes (I was keeping it under $20, okay! believe me, I wanted more): La Perdida by Jessica Abel (a graphic novel), The Tattoo Artist by Jill Coment (which I initially pulled off the shelf because it had deckled pages), and Paperback Original by Will Rhode. I figured if any of them sucked, I'd only be out a couple of bucks.

Well, so far I'm 3 for 3. ^_^ I'm only halfway through Paperback, but it's hilariously odd. La Perdida (which means "the lost one") was very much like Blankets in Mexico without the warm fuzzy feelings. And The Tattoo Artist was a gem, not for its plot, which was actually rather simple, but for it's prose and construction. Remember how Momento is boring as hell told forwards, but intriguing told in a backwards patchwork? Yeah, kinda like that. And the prose is beautiful. I highly recommend it.

Death of a Car [Mar. 17th, 2009|09:56 pm]
Soooo I hydroplaned down a hill into a stopped car yesterday. No one was hurt...except the Bubblesmobile, who will probably be declared dead later this week.

Seriously, it was bad. The grille is in the engine block and my rearview detached and flew across the car. I wasn't going that fast to start with, but add in water and gravity and...yeah. At least I know that 9-year-old airbags work. Good thing, too, or my face would have painfully met the steering wheel. And the residual ringing in my ears has mostly subsided at this point (the first two minutes were like being underwater). I will always hate the smell of that powder, though. Nasty nasty nasty. The only other injuries are a small burn on my right hand and a bruised left knee (yes, my drawing hand and my bad knee, ironically).

The other car didn't appear to suffer much. I was braking so hard that Bubbles' nose ducked under his bumper, so he ended up with a few dents and some broken-but-functional taillights. I was more worried about him, but he's fine; I talked to him this morning.

I think I'm mostly over it at this point. I think. Today was a little rough, especially driving my mother's car. (I'm not fond of driving it anyway. Add in crash fears and I was a mess.) But I came home early from work and had a nap and I feel a lot calmer now.

Still sad, though. It's like I accidentally killed a loyal pet. I had a lot of history with that car...

Plus, there's the lovely issue of not being able to afford to buy myself a new one. Almost 26 and still being "bailed out" by my parents. Dammit.

blargle argle [Feb. 21st, 2009|12:07 pm]
It was, to say the least, a difficult, stressful week. I spent most of it running around like a headless chicken trying to get stuff finalized for the grant project I'm doing: getting supply orders approved, designing (and redesigning, grr) t-shirts, badgering local cosplayers into being models (thank you, Mer!), etc. Combine that with not enough sleep AND no personal art time because I was doing overspill work at home, and you had a very unstable Allison. I almost lost it a couple of times.

BUT, that's in the past. I had a lovely calming evening last night, and to my delight my mother already did all the laundry, so I can sew like mad for a couple of days. (VERY necessary because my costume for Momo hasn't gotten beyond the pattern stage and there's only a few weekends left.)

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?! [Feb. 11th, 2009|08:46 pm]
Venus Clothing and Swimwear totally just won my award for the Most Ridiculous Outfits of the year. I mean, some of their stuff would be cute and attractive on the right woman, but most of it it just hilariously over the top. Like, they have "corset shorts." (No, I'm not kidding.) I'm going to have to use some of these atrocities in a comic...

BTW, I found this site because the, ahem, trophy wife next-door-neighbor's catalog was put in our mailbox.

We all knew this day would come... [Jan. 28th, 2009|08:51 pm]
So, today it finally happened. I bought cosplay supplies for the first time in months.

I got asked to be a cosplay Guest at MomoCon, and while I have old things I could wear, part of me thought it would be kind of silly to Guest in something eons old like Robin. (Re and I have been discussing Juri and Saionji, and I really want to wear Juri again, but I'm too chicken to try on the pants right now. They were quite tight when I made them 18 months ago!)

So the urge to make something (well, something in particular) has been growing slowly over the past few weeks, and since Michael is the bestest boyfriend in the whole wide world I had a JoAnn's gift card to work with. Yes..."had." Note the past tense. My project is relatively simple and therefore relatively inexpensive, but...it's cosplay. :)

Anyway, finally feeling better. Whatever that horrible illness is, it kicks your ass, lingers, and then comes back in for one final hurrah before finally going the fuck away. Seriously, not fun.

ugh, at least I was productive... [Jan. 15th, 2009|11:32 pm]
So I've been sick. For days. In the Coughing-Up-Lungs Club. But at least I got my art site updated. Now if only I can update it again before another 9 months go by, that'd be great.

At least if I don't it's linked to my sketchblog now...

I love how resolve is both a noun and a verb... [Jan. 4th, 2009|11:20 pm]
So my New Year's resolution is simply to draw every day. To aid me in this endeavor, I finally stared a sketchblog. Chances are good that I'll be updating in post-dated chunks (for instance, tonight I don't feel like hooking up the scanner, so you'll get this weekend tomorrow), but at least you'll get to see what I'm doing on a regular basis.
